Medicare, Advantage & Supplement
Q: What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?
A: Medicare Advantage plans are all-in-one alternatives to Original Medicare offered by private insurers. Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare to cover what Medicare doesn’t—like copays and deductibles.
Q: Do I need both Medicare Advantage and a Supplement?
A: No. You can only enroll in one or the other—not both at the same time.
Q: What’s included in a Medicare Advantage plan?
A: (Advantage) Part C is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans must cover everything that the Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers, and will often include extra benefits.
Q: When can I enroll in Medicare or switch plans?
A: Initial Enrollment starts 3 months before your 65th birthday. There’s also Annual Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7) and Open Enrollment (Jan 1–Mar 31) for certain changes.
Q: Will I lose my doctor if I switch to Medicare Advantage?
A: It depends on the network. We help verify your providers before you enroll to ensure continuity of care.
Q: What is Medicare Part D?
A: Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. It helps cover the cost of medications.
Q: Who can get Medicare Part D?
A: Anyone who is enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or Part B can join a Part D plan.

Q: Is Part D automatically included with Medicare?
A: No. You have to enroll separately in a Part D plan through a private insurer.
Q: What does Part D cover?
A: It covers most outpatient prescription drugs, including brand-name and generic drugs listed on the plan’s formulary (approved drug list).
Q: How much does it cost?
A:
-
Monthly premium (varies by plan)
-
Annual deductible (up to $545 in 2024, varies by plan)
-
Copays/coinsurance at the pharmacy
-
A possible penalty if you don’t enroll when first eligible and don’t have other drug coverage
Q: When can I enroll?
A:
-
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): When you first become eligible for Medicare
-
Annual Enrollment Period: Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year
-
Special Enrollment Periods: For qualifying life events like moving or losing coverage
Q: Do I get a penalty if I don't enroll in Medicare or Part D on time?
A: Yes, you might.
-
If you delay Medicare Part B (medical insurance) and don’t have other qualifying coverage, you may pay a 10% penalty for each full year you were eligible but didn’t enroll. This penalty is added to your Part B premium for life.
-
If you delay Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) and go 63+ days without creditable drug coverage, you’ll pay a permanent monthly penalty—1% of the national base premium for each uncovered month.
Tip: To avoid penalties, enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period or ensure you have creditable coverage from another source.
